About B12

Vitamin B12 is a cobalamin: a corrin ring around a cobalt atom. The group bound to the cobalt names the form — cyano-, methyl-, hydroxo- or adenosylcobalamin. This listing is cyanocobalamin, the form that the CAS number (68-19-9), formula (C63H88CoN14O14P) and molecular weight (1355.4 g/mol) in the table describe. In cells, B12 is the cofactor of methionine synthase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase.

Which form of B12 is this?

Cyanocobalamin, the form the CAS number and formula in the table refer to. Methylcobalamin, hydroxocobalamin and adenosylcobalamin are different compounds with their own identifiers; if you need one of them, ask before ordering rather than relying on the product name.

Why does B12 have to be kept away from light?

Cobalamins are light-sensitive: light degrades the corrin ring. Keep the material protected from light at every step, at the temperature the storage notes give for its configuration.
