About Glutathione

Glutathione is the main low-molecular-weight thiol in cells. Its cysteine carries a free thiol group, and that group is what makes it redox-active: two molecules oxidize to the disulfide GSSG. This listing is the reduced form, GSH (CAS 70-18-8, C10H17N3O6S, 307.33 g/mol).

We list it under Longevity & mitochondria with NAD+ and the other cofactors. A review by Forman et al. (2009) covers its roles, how it is measured and how cells make it. Glutathione FAQ

Is this GSH or GSSG?

GSH, the reduced form. Air, heat and light convert it to GSSG, the oxidized disulfide, which is why the storage notes ask for protection from oxygen and light. If your work depends on the reduced form, ask for the GSH/GSSG ratio to be reported on the COA of your lot.

Is glutathione a peptide?

Yes, a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine — with one unusual bond: glutamate is linked to cysteine through its side-chain (γ) carboxyl group rather than the usual α-carboxyl. Its COA reports HPLC purity and MS identity like the peptides around it in the catalog.
