About NAD+

NAD+ is not a peptide but the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, the coenzyme that carries electrons in cellular redox reactions. It is also consumed as a substrate by the sirtuins, by PARP enzymes in the DNA-damage response and by CD38.

Falling NAD+ levels are one thread of current aging research; the review by Imai et al. (2014) on NAD+ and sirtuins and the 2023 update of the hallmarks of aging (López-Otín et al.) set out the background.
