Research background

About VIP

VIP is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide of the secretin and glucagon family. Said and Mutt isolated it from pig intestine in 1970 and published its sequence in 1974; it was later found throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. It signals through two receptors, VPAC1 and VPAC2.

Because VIP acts in the gut, the airways, blood vessels, immune cells and the brain's circadian clock, it turns up in many research fields. The reviews by Smalley et al. (2009) on innate immune responses and by Iwasaki et al. (2019) on the gastrointestinal system are good starting points. We list it under Cognition & sleep with the other neuropeptides.

VIP FAQ

Why does the C-terminal amide matter?

Native VIP ends in an amide (-NH2), and that end is part of the structure its receptors recognize. A free-acid version differs by about 1 Da, which the MS identity on the COA tells apart.

What should I include in a VIP request?

The specification (5 mg or 10 mg), the number of kits and any extra tests you need — water content or counter-ion, for example, are available on request and listed on the COA when tested.
